I did not come up with this run. I originally read about it in "Massacre's Rune Farm Run" or something like that on gwonline.net. Now that I'm not plagiarizing...
Why farm ettins?: I asked myself that when I first heard about it. They are only lvl 15, don't drop max weapons, and they are ugly. Then I found out that they drop runes like paperboys drop newspapers. For me, in one hour or less, I can fill up my entire inventory with runes, usually about three to four of them are gold. Happily, this run has also unlocked almost every rune for my pvp characters. Sadly, I have not seen the much desired Superior Absorbtion rune yet. One hour usually nets at least 3k, usually around 5-10k. There are better farming spots, but that elusive Sup. Abs. keeps calling me.
The idea behind the run: kill ettins for eternity. In other words, be able to kill them indefinitely without running into the farming code (which makes item drops decrease dramatically if you farm one spot too often.) You avoid the code by running an entire area. I.e., you run from one entrance of North Kryta Province to another. Areanet has said they don't like it when people pop out the gate, kill a few monsters, pop back in the gate, pop back out... They prefer people to "finish" an area. Thus, finishing the area retards the farming code and you get to run back and forth across North Kyrta Province until you are glutted with runes.
The Run:
This is in North Kryta Province, between Nebo Terrace and Scoundrel's Rise. The nearby towns are, as shown, Beetletun, Bergen, and Gates. As you can see, the run goes through the Ascalon Settlement, down in a "u" away from the beach, and then east along a ridge towards Scoundrel's Rise. This run avoids the mergoyles on the beach and happily encounters all the ettin spawn spots that I know of. You will run into anywhere from 5-20 ettins in one run.
1: Ascalon Settlement
2: The ridge. It has the last 2-3 ettins and, oftentimes, a Mergoyle boss that I like to assassinate if there aren't any other mergoyle's protecting it. Free 2% morale bonus!
Tips: I usually start from Beetletun, run past the mergoyles just out the gate, heading east (while avoiding any wavebreakers as if they were Brittney Spears music), kill the two pairs of tengu, and then kill the big spawn of ettins past them. Then I run to North Kryta Province where the repeatable action is. Some people run past everything in Nebo Terrace. But I'm a blood thirsty pirate. Fill the chumbuckets, maties!
A speed boost is a nice skill to have, it lets you get away from mergoyles and scales more easily. I usually wait until I am in the midst of the pesky creatures and then hit the speed boost.
Why do I run past mergoyles and scales? Because they are mesmers and necromancers, silly! Warriors hate them! Plus, they don't drop runes.
